The agricultural advantages and consumer acceptance or otherwise of genetically modified crops with particular emphasis on potatoesThe agricultural advantages and consumer acceptance or otherwise of genetically modified crops with particular emphasis on potatoes
Walter Simon

As world population continues to grow at exponential rates and is forecast to hit 9 billion in 50 years time, according to the United Nations, it is vital that technology in the ability to produce food continues to improve.

The author argues in favour of genetic modification as a method of further increasing food production. Arguments in favour of GM production include the ability of this technology to reduce the need for pesticide usage, an important factor in the developing world where many workers are sick due to over exposure to pesticides due to a lack of information over precautions to take during application. This is developed in relation to the potato industry including the opportunities and problems this presented the industry focussing on North America in addition to analysing consumer attitudes and recognising the difference between North American and European consumers. Predictions of future development include making European consumers accept the need for GM potatoes and then the environmental and blight control benefits leading to widespread uptake.

The author travelled across much of the USA and Canada to compile this report.

The opportunities GM and other biotechnologies offer both the consumer and the farmerThe opportunities GM and other biotechnologies offer both the consumer and the farmer
Keith Adamson

For centuries mankind has used new technologies, intelligence and knowledge to feed an increasing world population. The next step is Genetic Modification and other biotechnologies despite it not being adopted as new methods were in the past.

This report outlines the author's perspective that organic, conventional and GM agriculture can all exist within the UK despite the fear of the public and other pressure groups. The report begins by explaining what biotechnology is and why the use of this in plant breeding is essential for the future, explaining the controversy between a natural UK and a GM UK environment. The GM position in many other countries is explained, presenting how it can be adopted with success. This is coherently led to the overriding benefits that GM provides the producer, such as pest resistant crops, and the consumer in terms of healthier products with less chemical composition. The reasons why GM is prevented in Europe are discussed before concluding that the EU will adopt GM to remain a leader in food production.

The author visited the USA, Canada and China to complete this report.
