The role of the internet in agricultureThe role of the internet in agriculture
Alys Kindred

There has been an explosion in the use of the internet during the during the late 1990's and into the 21st century whilst agriculture has faced disease scares, falling prices and widespread recession. There may be potential therefore for the two to be combined for the benefit of farmers and of internet service providers.

This report examines the various uses of the internet such as a communication medium, a provider of information and a method by which to conduct e-commerce. This is related to the many challenges that have developed over recent years within agriculture in terms of the internet's ability to alleviate some of these difficulties. These include easing the administration burden through e-commerce and saving time as UK labour is currently expensive. However the cost of the technology and the attitude of the people traditionally involved in agriculture may prevent this from becoming as revolutionary as first thought. Nevertheless the conclusions create hope for the development of agricultural e-commerce as more farmers go online whilst it can also become a very important networking role in an often isolated industry.

Alongside extensive research in the UK, the author travelled through the USA.
