About this book
Poultry Signals
a practical guide for poultry-oriented management
Proper management starts with recognising signals in practice. For poultry-keepers, this means being alert when in the hen house, watching and listening to the animals, and paying attention to their behaviour as a group as well as their individual behaviour. This usually provides much information about animals’ health, well-being and production for poultry-keepers to use for improving economic results and the well-being of the animals, as well as their own. Poultry farming is currently investing in various new housing systems that require another type of management. The book Poultry Signals includes points of departure allowing for more animal-oriented procedures and is vital for poultry-keepers and anyone involved in poultry on a regular basis.
This book is a successful total concept for you to use in associate management.
Objective and target group
This book provides practical tips for poultry-keepers in order to optimise the environment and health of their poultry. There are smart solutions in the area of housing, how to deal with deviant behaviour and improving egg quality. The book Poultry Signals supports poultry-keepers in their role as an entrepreneur and animal-keeper, the direct result of which is optimal management.
Lay-out and contents
Poultry Signals is a book for viewing, thinking and activity in particular and an extension to the Roodbont signal series. Its lay-out is identical to the concept used for the successful books Cow Signals, Pig Signals, Grassland Signals and Soil Signals and their themed editions.
Core elements are:
- much practical and immediately applicable professional information;
- clear tips and assistance in separate boxes allowing for the information to be extremely accessible;
- clear explanation in words and pictures;
- many pictures and illustrations from practice.
The edition has a portrait size of 20.5 x 26.5 cm , includes 96 pages and is printed full colour. The retail price is € 29.90 (incl. 6% VAT). The edition will be published in the spring of 2009.
Meetings
In addition to the book, workshops and lectures are also part of the Poultry Signals concept. The books from the signal series have proven to be excellent marketing instruments.
Your associations with the poultry sector will become more profound and are expected to immediately result in additional and relevant market information. This market information can be used to even better map out the requirements and needs of your clients.
Concise contents
The basic assumption of the lay-out of Poultry Signals is sighting: in the hen house, the animals, manure, etc. A considerable amount of knowledge exceeds the sector despite the fact that poultry farms are characterised by considerable diversity. This knowledge is the principal part of the book. In addition, each chapter pays specific attention to laying hens, chickens bred for meat, propagation and rearing. The (provisional) arrangement of chapters is as follows:
· Chapter 1: Learning to observe (list of terms, assessment, anatomy as well as head adornments and feathering play an important role).
· Chapter 2: Observing in the hen house (accommodation, ventilation, lighting, division of animals).
· Chapter 3: Poultry behaviour (normal behaviour, signal behaviour, effects of parasites, deviant behaviour: feather pecking, cannibalism, egg pecking and ground eggs).
· Chapter 4: Kinetics (locomotion score, what does a chicken express with its locomotion, foot score, the use of free range by laying hens).
· Chapter 5: Manure and nutrition (digestive score, condition of litter, intestinal parasites).
· Chapter 6: Having an eye for eggs (translating egg characteristics into management).
· Information about standard values, useful addresses and an index.

About the Author
Poultry Signals was written in collaboration with advisers, poultry veterinary surgeons, poultry researchers and of course poultry-keepers from practice. The authors are Monique Bestman (Louis Bolk Institute), Marko Ruis (ASG), Jos Heijmans (GD) and Koos van Middelkoop.
The initiative is supported by NOP (Dutch organisation of poultry-keepers) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries).
As a result of these close contacts, a reference book was created that optimally anticipates the specific requirements of poultry-keepers.
