Essential Equine Nutrition is a book written for students, vets, breeders and equine professionals, giving a broad coverage of the main areas of equine nutrition needed for understanding how best to feed horses and ponies.
It illustrates the science of equine nutrition as it currently stands, including where there are gaps in the current research, and how best to apply the data that is available to practical solutions in feeding horses.
The style of writing is deliberately kept simple in order to allow non-scientists access to the information in a clear and concise manner.
Only proven scientific data is used within the book and how best to apply the data that is available to practical solutions in feeding horses

Dr Lucy Waldron has a PhD in Animal Nutrition and, since 1995, has worked in the animal feed industry in all species, mainly in the development of feeds and speciality ingredients to improve feeding efficiency, welfare and reduce the dependency on chemical and drug prophylactics, including antibiotics and hormones. Within this work she has been involved in research work, new product development, regulatory affairs, method development and running laboratories, technical support and marketing.
In 2005 she moved to New Zealand providing scientific and technical services to the feed and allied industries worldwide, including research projects, student supervision and examinations, data analysis to training, writing and editing. She has developed her own proprietary mix of grass seed for horses in NZ, focussed on maximising fibre and limiting sugar levels. In addition, Dr Waldron has been an expert witness in the Environment Court for reducing pollution from farm animals, and has been actively involved in researching rural water quality and its impact on animal health.
Her independent consultancy company, LWT Animal Nutrition Ltd, has clients globally, and deals with all species of animals, both companion and agricultural. Dr Waldron is Editor in Chief for two scientific journals (World’s Poultry Science Journal and Journal of Applied Animal Nutrition) and Scientific Editor for British Poultry Science. She is a Registered Nutritionist in the UK and NZ and an Accredited Animal Scientist with the British Society of Animal Science. Dr Waldron has successfully supervised many postgraduate students, has been involved in more than 50 peer reviewed and conference publications and has written or edited ten scientific books relating to animal nutrition.
